STABILIZING BRACES OPERATION AND ADJUSTMENT

21 February 2020 | Blog

Stabilizing braces are specialized padded inserts used in all kinds of wheelchairs. They are an important piece of equipment meeting the individual needs of your ward. Each additional possibility of adjusting their position has a positive effect on strengthening the correct seating position of the child, and thus, comfort.

Their number and method of adjustment are adapted to the parameters in a way to optimize the adjustment for different age groups of users.

TYPES OF BRACES AND THEIR TASKS

Depending on the size of the chair, there are braces located at the height of the hips, thoracic spine and head. Their main task is to maintain the correct sitting position of the child by supporting and holding specific body parts in a certain position.

At the hips level, adjusted braces help to adjust the width of the seat, ensuring correct posture and better stabilization.

Braces at the thoracic level help maintain the optimum position of the child’s body. An additional advantage is the possibility of adjusting their angle, allowing for fine adjustments in the case of spinal curvatures and spasticity.

Braces at the level of head, like headrest, secure and stabilize the child’s head.

ADJUSTMENT METHODS

Based on the selected pushchairs, we will present the benefits offered by the adjustment of braces.

MEWA

MEWA pushchair dedicated for children up to 90 – 125 cm and weighing up to 35 kg has two sets of braces: lumbar and thoracic. This is an optimal amount adjusted to the length of the backrest /max 62cm/. MEWA pushchair, like its little brother MOUSE, has a unique support structure allowing for mounting braces at any position and angle. The installation of braces is very simple – just screw them using two stabilizing handles.

GRIZZLY

GRIZZLY pushchair dedicated for children up to 85 – 140 cm and weighing up to 43 kg has the ability to expand the set of braces with a section for the neck and head. The frame structure of the backrest works in a similar manner as the above-mentioned backrests, but the number and type of adjustment holes are optimized to the needs of older children. In response to their needs, the braces of GRIZZLY can be extended up to 6 cm, helping maintain stability and security.
